প্যাডেল স্টীমার -রকেটে করে ঢাকা থেকে সুন্দরবন

নদীমাতৃক বাংলাদেশ। একটা সময় ব্রিটিশ সময়ে এই নৌপথে চলতে শুরু করে যান্ত্রিক সব দানব। বিশাল আকারের এই সব কয়লা চুল্লি দ্বারা চালিত স্টিম ইঞ্জিনের প্যাডেল স্টিমার বাংলার বিভিন্ন নদী পথে মালামাল ও মানুষজন একই সাথে বয়ে নিয়ে চলেছে। যানের দু-পাশে প্যাডেল পানিতে দিয়ে সামনে এগিয়ে যায় বলে এগুলোকে প্যাডেল স্টিমারও বলা হয়।

সারা পৃথিবীতে যে প্যাডেল স্টিমার চলত, নতুন সব প্রযুক্তির উন্নতির ফলে সেগুলো এক সময় বাতিল হয়ে যায়। তবে বাতিল হয়নি বাংলায়। পুরো পৃথিবীতে অল্প যে কটি প্যাডেল স্টিমার চালু আছে, বাংলাদেশেই আছে তার মাঝে পাঁচটি। প্রায় শত বছর বয়সী এই প্যাডেল স্টিমারে চড়ে ঢাকা থেকে খুলনার কাছাকাছি মোড়েলগঞ্জে যাওয়া যায়।

বিখ্যাত লোনলি প্ল্যানেট গাইডের মতে, স্রেফ এটাতে চড়ে যাবার জন্যই খুলনা যাওয়া যেতে পারে। স্টিমারে উঠলে এখনও দেখা মেলে কলোনিয়াল যুগের সাজসজ্জা, কাঠের কাজ এবং আরও নানারকম পুরাতন ডিজাইনের কাজ।

ঢাকার সদরঘাট থেকে ছেড়ে স্টিমার চাঁদপুর হয়ে পরদিন সকালে বরিশাল পৌঁছে। বরিশাল যাত্রাবিরতি করে আধ ঘণ্টার মতো। এরপর নলছিটি, ঝালকাঠি, কাউখালী, হুলারহাট (পিরোজপুর), চরখালী, বড় মাছুয়া, সন্ন্যাসী হয়ে মোড়েলগঞ্জ। আগে খুলনা পর্যন্ত যেত কিন্তু নাব্যতা সংকটের কারণে এখন আর যেতে পারেনা।

বিদেশী টুরিস্টদের কাছে বেশ জনপ্রিয় এ সার্ভিসটি। প্রায় সব টুরিস্টের ভ্রমণ তালিকায় প্যাডেল স্টিমার এর নাম থাকে। অনেক বিদেশী শুধু এটাতে চড়তেই বাংলাদেশে আসেন। গত বেশ কিছু বছর এগুলো ক্রমাগত লোকসান দিয়ে আসছে। এছাড়া এগুলো মেরামতেও কোটি কোটি টাকা খরচ হয়। তাই সরকার হয়তো একসময় বন্ধ করে দেবে এসব পুরনো স্টিমার। সেটা করার আগেই একবার ঘুরে আসুন শতবর্ষী এ জাহাজে।

Classes in Paddle Steamer (Rocket)

Paddle Steamer have two levels. Front side of the upper level is reserved for 1st class. There are 12 cabins here in large vessels, and 8 in the smaller ones. Half of them containing two single bed on the cabin, with a wash basin, and fan. Other half is with single bed with the same facilities. In the middle space between two cabin, there is sofa for sitting, and table for dining. The real highlight of 1st class, though, is the outside deck at the front of the boat, where you can sit while stewards serve tea and biscuits, and the Padma flows by.
Second class is at the back of the boat. Rooms are smaller than those in 1st class, and have no washbasin and no bed linen. There are small fans, though, and some chairs outside your door for scenery-gazing. If you are staying back here, it might be possible for you to dine in 1st class, for a fee, naturally. There are 10 cabins in this section in big vessels, and 6 in the smaller vessels.
Inter and deck classes are similar to those in ferries. Foreigners are highly unlikely to be sold tickets in either of these classes. You have to bring your sleeping bag to travel in this class.

Departure time of Paddle Steamer (Rocket)

From Dhaka, paddle steam boats leave everyday at 06.30 pm except Fridays, and reach Hularhat at 10.30 am and Morelganj at 02.30 pm next day. There might be 1 or 2 hours delay to reach this ports.
From Morelganj, they leave at 08.30 am, and leave Hularhat at 01.00 pm for Dhaka. It is a 16 hours journey from Hularhat. Does not operate in Sundays from this end to Dhaka.

টিকেট: টিকেট অনলাইন এ কাটতে হয়। www.shohoz.com এ গিয়ে ডানদিকে Launch এ ক্লিক করলে একটা ঘর আসে। সেখানে তারিখ বসিয়ে ভিসা, মাস্টার-কার্ড কিংবা বিকাশে পেমেন্ট করলে টিকেট চলে আসে। টিকেট সাধারণত যাত্রার ৪-৫ দিন আগে দেয়া হয়।
