Alpine

Alpines originated in Germany & are a steady, reliable goat. They are medium to huge in size & are consistent milk producers with of the longest lactation cycles. They average over one gallon of milk per day with a three.5% butterfat content. Alpines come in  any color imaginable & are adaptable to  any climate. The average size of an Alpine doe is 135 lbs.

Nigerian Dwarf

The Nigerian Dwarf goat is a small size breed, additionally one that gives a good scale of milk compare to its size. It is of the top choices for those small farm owners who have small piece of land. They can give from 1-2 Kg a day- which is impressive thinking about they are only around 18 inches in height! Their milk is also of the highest in butterfat which ranges anywhere from 6-10%. That means their milk is creamy & makes delicious cheese, ice cream & yogurt. Because of their size they make great goats for children as well as those in a more urban setting.

Nubian

Nubians are a medium to huge sized goat with lovable cute floppy ears. They come in a wide range of colors & patterns & have the ability to produce up to 5 liter a day, with the average being closer to 2.5 liter a day. They have of the highest butterfat contents of the standard dairy breeds at 4-5%. In the event you need plenty of milk & plan on making cheeses or soaps, Nubians can’t be beat. They can be a bit loud sometimes, I call ours crybabies, and so they might not be right for those who live in subdivisions & make definite you neighbors won’t mind before bringing them home. Nubians are my personal favorites!

LaManchas

LaManchas are a medium sized goat that are most basically recognized by their lack of ears! They have a friendly, simple going temperament & are hardy animals. LaManchas are nice producers with an average of 2-3 liter per day, with butterfat content around 4%. Personally, I love floppy ears, but I have heard plenty of LaMancha owners say that in the event you give them a chance you’ll fall in love & be hooked on them forever!

Saanen

Saanens are the largest of the dairy breeds & are often thought about the Holstein of the dairy goats. Saanens can produce plenty of milk- up to 7 liter per day- with an average production closer to 4 liter per day. While they do produce plenty of milk the butterfat content is low compared to a number of the other breeds. At 2-3% butterfat the Saanen’s milk won't appear as creamy & won't produce as rich of cheese or yogurt. These girls are huge, so you will need to make definite you have of a pasture for them to stretch their legs in & a fence strong to resist a bigger weight. Saanens are usually all white in color & mild mannered. This is the breed they started with- on a one acre lot in a subdivision!

Each breed is a small bit different. In the event you are short on space or only need milk for fresh drinking, Nigerians might be the best way to go. In the event you need a huge quantity of milk to make yogurt, buttermilk, cheese, soap or to feed a huge relatives you will probably need to go with of the standard breeds. I would also recommend looking for quality animals as against the first craigslist advertisement you see. You will be much happier in the event you buy a quality goat with a powerful milk lines.
